Charmant und prächtig, steht Patmos am nördlichsten Punkt des Dodekanes. Die malerischen Dörfer, die weißen Häuser, die kleinen Kirchen, die engen Gassen und das imposante Steinkloster des heiligen Johannes des Theologen erwecken jedem Besucher Respekt und Ehrfurcht. Patmos liegt zwischen Ikaria und Leros.

Sie ist voll von ruhigen Küsten und schönen Stränden mit blauem Wasser.

Auf dem Gipfel des Berges befindet sich das Kloster des hl. Johannes des Theologen, die wichtigste Sehenswürdigkeit der Insel, das 1088 vom Mönch Christodoulos erbaut wurde. Gebaut aus einheimischem Steinen, erhebt sich dieses eindrucksvolle Kloster majestätisch und ist ein Wallfahrtsort, an dem sich zahlreiche Pilger versammeln, um ihr geistliches Erbe zu genießen und seine Schönheit und Ruhe zu bewundern.

Auf Patmos befindet sich auch die Höhle der Offenbarung, in der der heilige Johannes der Tradition nach die Offenbarung schrieb, als er 95 n. Chr. als Exilant des römischen Kaisers Domitian ankam. In Gehweite der Höhle befindet sich die 1713 gegründete Patmiada-Schule, die als kirchliche Schule diente und auch ein Zentrum der versklavten Griechen war.

Auf Patmos gibt es viele malerische Dörfer mit gepflasterten Plätzen, engen Gassen, Kirchen und traditionellen Gebäuden. Skala ist die Hauptstadt und der Hafen der Insel, wo Boote ankern und liegt nur 3 km entfernt von Chora. Chora ist eine mittelalterliche Siedlung und erstreckt sich rund um das Kloster von Agios Ioannis.

Die heilige Insel Patmos mit ihrer religiösen und geheimnisvollen Atmosphäre ist ideal für einen ruhigen Urlaub. Zusätzlich zu ihrer historischen und kulturellen Tradition hat sie wunderschöne Landschaften mit spitzenartigen Küsten und wunderschönen Stränden.

Es lohnt sich, Groiko, Psili Ammos, Kato Kambos, Agrio Livadi, Diakofti, Lampi, Gerani und Lignino Strand zu besuchen. Aufgrund der religiösen Tradition der Insel ist es einen Besuch wert, die Insel ausser in den Sommerferien auch Ostern zu besuchen, da lokale Veranstaltungen und Feste während der Karwoche stattfinden.

The unspoiled beauty of Patmos throughout the centuries was the one that led Unesco in 1999 to proclaim the historical site comprising Chora (Patmos Town), the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse as UNESCO World Heritage Monument.

Patmos belongs to the European network COESIMA (Coopération Européenne des Sites Majeurs d’Accueil), which was established within the framework of the Community initiative INTERREG III South.

Mythologie & Geschichte

According to mythology, Patmos was called Letoisse and it was the island of Diana, daughter of Leto, after whom the island was named. Myth claims that Patmos lay on the bottom of the sea. Selini, the moon, was in love with Endymion, who would sleep in the temple of Diana at Karia, and every time she saw him, she would light the island in the water, creating a scene of unique beauty. Selini, asked Diana to raise the island above the sea and this was achieved with the help of Apollo, brother of Diana, who asked this favour from his father, Zeus.

After the island emerged and was warmed by the sun, Diana encouraged many people to inhabit it. According to another myth, the island was named by Neptune when he stepped on it (step: patima), thus the island was called at first „Patnos“ and later „Patmos“.

Traces of residencies, temples and fortifications indicate the inhabitation of Patmos since ancient times. The Mycenaeans give an account of the island’s inhabitants, while modern historians claim that Patmos‘ first inhabitants were Kares, Leleges and Pelasgi.

During the Roman years, Patmos was the land of exile of the Epistle John who wrote „Apocalypse“ inside the cave of the same name. The island suffered a long period of desertion until 1088, when it was offered to St Christodoulos by Alexios Komnenos A´. After the fall of Constantinople, many Christians sought refuge here, and the island thrived in the late 16th – early 17th century, due to its commercial connection with Crete, occupied at the time by the Venetians. In 1537, the island’s Turkish Occupation began, and in 1713, the monk and Scholar Makarios Kologeras established the School of Patmos.

Patmos was also the homeland of Emmanuel Xanthos, one of the founders of Hetaeria, who attended courses in the School of Patmos. The Turkish Occupation lasted until 1912, when the island came under the command of the Italians. Patmos, like all the Dodecanese islands, was united with Greece on 7 May 1948.

We all know the Bible and we are familiar with the Book of Revelations. Unknown to many, the Book of Revelations was actually written in Patmos, Greece. When Saint John the Divine was exiled, he was sent to Patmos, Greece, which was then a place for criminals because of its inaccessibility.

The monastery is visible from all parts of the island.

There are four villages in this little island: Kampos, Chora, Skala and Grikos

The island has 63 kilometers of coast, making it perfect for a beach holiday.
